When I told my interior designer mom I was once again using her for my meal ticket, she immediately started sending me Pinterest inspiration and photos from her favorite design magazines, so I knew she’d be up to the challenge. Today, she’s giving us a rundown of everything that’s important in home decor for spring, from wicker animals to square-backed Adirondack chairs. Interior designer mom strikes again.

elephant-basket
West Elm

An elephant basket to store all your kids’ toys…

My mom has been seeing wicker animals everywhere. We love this one because it doubles as storage for a playroom or nursery. It’s hand woven and is latex- and lead-free. If you’re looking to splurge on a grown-up version, this one is the elephant side table of our dreams. ($99, West Elm)

doormat
Porte & Hall

A doormat that goes inside your door…

Yes, you read that right. This mat is thin enough to go right inside your entryway without keeping the door from fully swinging open. It’s great for catching any dust or dirt and is slip- and water-resistant. It comes in 16 patterns. ($64, Porte & Hall)

rose-vase
Etsy

A rose vase for a touch of silver…

One thing a room always needs, according to my mom, is a vintage silver piece. These rose vases are fun because they’re actually useful; just cut a few stems from your garden and stick them in the top for a handmade arrangement. Each one is unique, and you can find other versions here and here. ($35.27, Retromagination via Etsy)

typewriter
Etsy

A vintage typewriter that’s also a display piece…

Typewriters are having a moment, and not just because of “The Tortured Poets Department.” They’re works of art that add a vintage flair to your decor. Plus, most of them actually work. There’s an entire vintage typewriters section on Etsy, so you can find one that suits your style. ($165, TheVintageManCave via Etsy)

lawn-chairs
Amazon

A set of lawn chairs for the beach…

When I was growing up, we would bring these folding lawn chairs to the beach rather than the low-slung traditional beach chairs. I love that these are higher up off the sand, so you can sit by the water without getting a swimsuit full of sand. They’re also great for attending sports games or sitting in the backyard and are surprisingly durable. ($53.99, Amazon)

carrom
Amazon

A Carrom board that’ll keep them entertained for hours…

Next time you’re hosting, pull out this multi-game Carrom board and let the kids go to town. You can play 100 different games on this wooden board, including checkers and pool. It’s a fun decor piece to hang on a basement or playroom wall and pull down when you’re ready to play. ($97.95, Amazon)

egg-stones
Wayfair

A set of egg stones that make a pretty display…

These hand-carved stones come in a set of six that you can put in a bowl, use as a paperweight, or give as gifts. The jade version is commonly seen in home decor, and lately my mom has been noticing more of the beige version. Both of them lend positive energy to a home. ($49.99, Wayfair)

watering-can
Amazon

A watering can that looks vintage…

Vintage watering cans are in, but you also want one that gets the job done. This one looks like it was passed down from your grandmother, but it’s built to last and made of weather-resistant steel. If you’re looking for a splurge, this one that’s made in England fits the bill. ($29.99, Amazon)

Buy it
adirondack-chairs
Wayfair

Adirondack chairs with a nontraditional twist…

My mom says Adirondack chairs will never go out of style, but she’s specifically seeing the square-backed ones as the It Item right now. These are weather-resistant and UV-protected, so they’ll never rot or splinter. The high back is supportive and makes them a delight to lounge in. PS: West Elm’s version is worth the splurge if you spend a lot of time in your yard. ($229.99, Wayfair)

Buy it
headboard
Walmart

A rattan headboard that looks more expensive than it is…

Rattan headboards are all the rage, and this one looks charmingly vintage in dark walnut wood. It’ll provide texture and an airy look to any room. It comes in three different sizes. This one caught my eye, as well. ($182.70+, Walmart)

Buy it
rug
Cozey

A rug you don’t have to worry about getting dirty…

This vintage-inspired rug is durable, comfortable to walk on with bare feet, and washable. One of our editors swears by it, so she doesn’t have to worry if she tracks mud in or spills when she’s eating on the couch. The Periwinkle Grey is pretty for spring. ($140+, Cozey)

candles
Etsy

Hand-painted taper candles that’ll never go out of style…

Florals for spring? Maybe not groundbreaking, but we’re still a sucker for them. These are adorned with pretty pink roses, yellow flowers, and vines. Use them as part of a centerpiece or gift them for a birthday or wedding shower. The paint is nontoxic, so you can burn them, too. ($22.28+, KazokuWorkshop via Etsy)

quilt
Anthropologie

A floral quilt you’ll never get tired of…

For my last apartment, my mom and I picked out a floral quilt from Anthropologie, and it was the most soft and comfortable quilt I’ve ever owned. Not to mention the florals always put me in a good mood. This new version has a pretty scalloped edge and comes in several patterns. I love the “Guacamole” version. ($178+, Anthropologie)

placemat
Target

A pair of seagrass placemats…

It’s all about a natural look for spring, from rattan to wicker to seagrass. These are round with a wavy rim and will go seamlessly with any tablescape. They’ll be a hit at your next outdoor soirée. ($10, Target)

Buy it
cutting-board
Etsy

A personalized cutting board that would make a great gift…

Just choose your shape and size and upload a photo of a handwritten recipe you’d like engraved on it. It’s such a special piece to leave out year round with a recipe that’s important to your family. You can even make it double-sided with two recipes. ($29.99+, WoodHaveSaid via Etsy)

planter
Ballard Designs

A planter that looks European…

The last time I went home, I noticed my mom had put a stone planter with flowers in it on a stone column in one of our walkways, and I was struck by how pretty it looked. It reminded me of Italian gardens and is a great way to add a little European flair to an outdoor space. See, Mom, I do notice. ($159.20+, Ballard Designs)
