Skimm'd after deep cleaning the apartment

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"As irrationally as possible" – How the winner of the Nobel Prize in economics plans to spend the prize money. He won for his work on how human beings often make irrational financial decisions.

WILDFIRES

The Story

Right now, more than a dozen wildfires are sweeping across Northern California.

Tell me more.

The fires started Sunday night and quickly spread because of a combo of dry conditions and heavy wind. At least 10 people have died, and dozens are missing. Another 100 people are injured, and about 20,000 have been forced to evacuate. At least 1,500 homes and buildings have been destroyed, including in Napa and Sonoma counties. It's unclear what caused the fires. Firefighters are still working to contain them.

These are some of the deadliest wildfires in California's history. Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency, and has asked the US gov for emergency aid.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when you cross something off your to-do list…

Check. This weekend, the Trump administration was heads down on its to-do list, moving to roll back major Obama-era policies. President Trump told Congress he'd negotiate a replacement to the DACA program in exchange for things like funding a US-Mexico border wall and pulling federal funding from sanctuary cities. Dems say these terms are a deal-breaker. Meanwhile, EPA chief Scott Pruitt moved to undo the Clean Power Plan requiring power plants to cap carbon emissions. And the Trump administration is making it easier for companies to opt out of the Obamacare rule requiring most employers cover birth control. It says this is in part because the rule could "affect risky sexual behavior in a negative way." Also, retiring Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) has decided to speak his truth on the way out the door. He and Trump had a very mature Twitter exchange. And then Corker gave an interview in which he said Trump may be putting the US "on the path to World War III." So there's that.

What to say at the end of a movie...

Saw that coming. Over the weekend, The Weinstein Company fired co-founder Harvey Weinstein. This came days after a New York Times investigation revealed sexual harassment allegations against the VIP Hollywood producer going back nearly three decades. His behavior has apparently been an open secret in Hollywood for years. Weinstein says many of the allegations aren't true. Last week, he apologized and said he'd be taking a leave of absence from his company. Since then, more women have come forward with accusations. SNL got called out for staying silent on all this. Meryl Streep, Judi Dench, and Glenn Close spoke out against him. Donna Karan went the other way. Now, Harvey's out for good. And The Weinstein Company plans on changing its name.

What to say when you're waiting for test results..

So are some big NFL stars. Houston Texans star defensive end JJ Watt suffered a serious leg injury and is out for the season. So is NY Giants star Odell Beckham Jr, who fractured his ankle. Meanwhile, there was drama off the field. VP Mike Pence left the Indianapolis Colts-San Francisco 49ers game after several 49ers players knelt during the national anthem. Reminder: last year, then-San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick started taking a knee during the national anthem to protest police shootings of black people. More players have joined in some kind of protest since then. President Trump has harshly criticized this, saying it's disrespectful to the flag and country. Later Sunday, Trump tweeted that he asked Pence to leave if there were any protests. Also over the weekend, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones – who is a Trump supporter – said any player who is "disrespectful to the flag" won't be allowed to play. ESPN host Jemele Hill tweeted that fans could respond by boycotting Cowboys advertisers. This comes after she tweeted last month that Trump is a "white supremacist." Supporters say Hill has a right to her own opinion and shouldn't be silenced. The White House says she should be fired. And ESPN says it's suspending Hill because she's now violated its social media guidelines twice.

What to say to your co-worker...

Is that my pen? I'm sensing a pattern. Yesterday, we found out that – surprise – Russia bought political ads on Google platforms to try to interfere with the 2016 US election. We know that Russia influenced the election in part by spreading misinformation. But we continue to discover their 50 shades of shadiness. Last month, Facebook said it had unknowingly sold about $100,000 worth of ads to a company with ties to the Kremlin. And Twitter has found hundreds of Russia-linked accounts that posted ads during the election. Now, turns out Google also sold tens of thousands of dollars in ads to Russian agents. Meaning voters were being targeted not just on social media, but on their email accounts and YouTube too. Comforting.

THING TO KNOW

Chirping

Like what a bird does, but not as pleasant sounding. It's slang for gossiping or trash talking.
