Skimm'd over champagne and donuts

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Tight Butt" – How a local TV station mistakenly identified Denver Broncos tight end Jake Butt. It was only a matter of time.

SCRAPPED

The Story

President Trump is taking a red pen to Obamacare.

Catch me up.

After years of promising to repeal and replace Obamacare, the GOP has tried and failed...and tried and failed to deliver since gaining control of Congress. So Trump is taking matters into his own hands.

What's his plan?

First, he signed an executive order that could make it easier for small businesses to offer cheaper health insurance plans with fewer benefits than are currently required. Then late last night, the White House said Trump plans to end billions of dollars worth of subsidies that help insurers cover health costs for low-income Americans.

What are people saying?

Supporters say the executive order could provide more affordable options for healthy people, and that the subsidies are an insurance industry bailout. Critics say both moves increase costs for sicker people who need more comprehensive coverage. The insurance industry has warned that without subsidies, premiums will likely go up. And a group of attorneys general have already come out saying they plan to sue the Trump administration to keep subsidy funding intact.

These are Trump's biggest moves yet to send Obamacare packing. But lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are worried they could increase the number of uninsured. Some say this might be just the fuel needed to hammer out a bipartisan healthcare deal.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What people are watching...

Gaza. Yesterday, Palestinian rivals Fatah and Hamas say they've hashed out a plan for control of Gaza – the small strip of land on the Mediterranean. Fatah and Hamas control different Palestinian territories. Fatah has the West Bank. Hamas – an Islamist militant group that the US and others consider a terrorist group – has been in charge of Gaza since seizing it from Fatah a decade ago. Since then, Gaza's neighbors Israel and Egypt have put up a blockade limiting trade and preventing Gaza's two million people from leaving. Yesterday's agreement says Hamas would hand Gaza back to the Fatah-backed government, and that the two groups would combine security forces and gov officials. Fatah and Hamas have attempted unity deals like this before, so we'll see if this one sticks. But many Palestinians are hopeful.

What to say to your friend after a night out...

Get home safe. Yesterday, US officials said they secured the release of a Canadian-American family kidnapped by a terror network in Afghanistan. Back in 2012, a pregnant American woman and her Canadian husband were backpacking when they were kidnapped by the Haqqani – a group with ties to the Taliban. They were held hostage for five years, and had two more kids while in captivity. In recent days, acting on US intelligence, the Pakistani military freed the family. And they're set to fly back to North America. Pakistan has been called out for years by the US for not doing more to crack down on militant groups in the region. President Trump called this a "positive moment" for US-Pakistan relations.

What people are talking about…

Louisiana State University. Earlier this week, 10 current and former students there were arrested in connection with the death of a fraternity pledge. Last month, the pledge – freshman Maxwell Gruver – died after a night of alleged hazing. The fraternity members left Gruver on a couch for hours before taking him to the hospital. His blood alcohol content was six times the legal limit for driving. Now, 10 men have been charged with hazing. One of them – the alleged ringleader – was also charged with negligent homicide. Add this to several high profile incidents that have put a bigger spotlight on Greek life recently.

What to say when a Khaled song comes on…

Another one. Yesterday, producer Isa Hackett came out with sexual harassment allegations against Amazon Studios head Roy Price. Amazon has since put Price 'on leave.' Hackett says Price came on to her repeatedly one night two years ago, even though she told him she is a lesbian, married, and bottom line not interested. She alleges he said gross things to her throughout the night while they were promoting their Amazon show, "Man in the High Castle." Hackett also says she told Amazon execs right away and an outside investigator was brought in – but she never heard the outcome. She said she was inspired to speak out now because of the 30 women who've gone public in the last week with allegations of sexual harassment and assault against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. Police in New York City and London are giving those allegations a closer look. Good idea.
