  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Pumpkin line up" – How a Missouri police department attempted to return dozens of stolen pumpkins to their rightful owners. It was really easy to tell them apart.

WHAT’S YOUR EMERGENCY?

The Story

President Trump has declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency.

Catch me up.

Millions of Americans are abusing opioids. These are highly addictive drugs that come in both legal (ex. OxyContin) and illegal (ex. heroin) forms. Nearly 100 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. Every state has been affected, but rural, lower-income communities in places like Ohio and West Virginia have been hit hardest.

What's the latest?

Trump's announcement means the US gov can now do things like expand medical care to rural areas and cut down on regulations keeping people from getting help. The administration also plans to launch an ad campaign aimed at keeping people off opioids. Over the summer, and again last week, Trump said he would declare a national emergency, which isn't the same thing as what he did yesterday.

What's the difference?

A national emergency would have let the gov dig into new funding and resources. A public health emergency lets the feds redirect existing resources.

Supporters say this move shows that the opioid crisis is a top priority for the Trump administration. Critics say it falls far short of what's needed to tackle the problem.

PS: We have a new audio product called Skimm Notes in theSkimm App. One of them is about the opioid crisis. Listen here.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when the doorbell rings...

They're here. Yesterday, the National Archives released thousands of docs related to JFK's assassination. These docs have been in the file cabinet for more than half a century. Last weekend, President Trump signed off on finally making them public. A handful are still being held back out of concerns they could harm national security. As for the rest, conspiracy theorists are speed reading as fast as they can.

What to say when you hear Joe Girardi is out

The LA Dodgers and the Houston Astros are still in it to win it. Tonight is game three of the World Series in Houston. Game two went 11 innings and both teams scored a combined eight homers. That's more than any World Series game ever. Now the series is tied 1-1. Oh hey batter batter.

What to say when you pump yourself up before a big meeting...

Let's get down to business. Yesterday, the House juuuusstt barely passed a budget blueprint that'll clear the way for the GOP to tackle tax reform. Overhauling the tax code was one of President Trump's key campaign promises and the top priority for the GOP. He wants corporate and income tax rates to drop it low, and to create fewer tax brackets. This budget bill – which the Senate already signed off on – tacks on some Senate rules that will let Republicans pass tax reform with fewer votes than normal. Meaning, they don't need support from Dems. They're trying to make it happen by the end of the year. Clock starts now.

What to say when you decide to spring for the guac...

Big day. Same for the tech world. Yesterday, Alphabet, Amazon, and Twitter all reported earnings. Alphabet is still bringing in the big ad bucks, and its profits strapped on wings and soared. The 'Zon is also crushing it, and sales are way up thanks to the company adding Whole Foods to its cart earlier this year. Twitter said that it could be profitable for the first time ever by next quarter. You go Glen Blue Bird. Meanwhile, Apple's iPhone 8 sales are under the weather. CVS Health is not. It's in talks to buy insurance company Aetna for more than $66 billion.

What people are talking about…

Mark Halperin. Earlier this week, five women accused the veteran journalist of sexual harassment. Halperin's known for books like "Game Change," and for his presidential election coverage. These women say that while he was the political director at ABC News, he did things like proposition employees for sex and grope them. He denied the groping. He also said that he now understands his "behavior was inappropriate" and apologized. MSNBC, where Halperin is now a contributor, said he's leaving his post. And HBO is dropping the project it was developing with him. Also, Selma Blair and Rachel McAdams are the latest actresses to accuse director James Toback of sexual harassment. The number of women who've come forward with accusations against him in recent days is now more than 200.

THING TO KNOW

Credit report vs. Credit score

Your credit report is like a financial resume. It includes your personal info, spending history, and times you may have gotten in trouble with something like bankruptcy or foreclosure. Your credit score is a three-digit number based on your credit report. Just like the SATs, 800 is good...300 not so much. Sign up here to keep an eye on your credit.
