PUERTO RICO

The Story

A new study says Hurricane Maria caused more than 4,600 deaths in Puerto Rico.

That seems really high.

It is. Puerto Rico is home to more than 3 million US citizens. Late last year, Hurricane Maria destroyed the island – wiping out its infrastructure and power grid. The official death toll from the storm was 64. Turns out, new research shows it could be a lot higher.

What's the latest?

Researchers say about 4,645 people died as a result of the storm. For context: that's more than two times Hurricane Katrina's death toll.

What caused this?

Delays in getting medical treatment. Or not being able to get any treatment at all. Damaged roads made it hard for people to get to doctors' offices or hospitals, and the lack of power made it impossible for things like hospital generators to work. Another major problem: the gov was slower to respond to Hurricane Maria than other US hurricanes.

Some areas of Puerto Rico still don't have power eight months after the storm. And with the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season about to start, it's unclear if the island is prepared to take another hit.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What people are talking about…

Roseanne Barr. Yesterday, ABC canceled its hit reboot of "Roseanne" over her racist tweet. Hulu and other networks are also taking a step back from the show. ABC's been humble-bragging about the reboot's high ratings. And its upcoming second season was one of the biggest shows on its lineup. But then Barr started tweeting. She said former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett was as if the "muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby." Just wow. She apologized to Jarrett and to the hundreds of people on her show who lost their jobs. But, no one was entertained. Not her cast mates. Not consulting producer Wanda Sykes. And definitely not ABC. The president of ABC Entertainment – the first African-American woman in charge of a major broadcast network – said the comment "is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values." And cut the cord on the show. Jarrett says that while she has people that have her back, her concern is for the others who experience everyday racism.

What to say when you're asked to take a side in a fight...

Pass. That's what the Supreme Court is doing with this Arkansas abortion case. This is about a 2015 law on medication abortion – a type of abortion during the early stages of pregnancy when a woman takes two pills and doesn't need surgery. The law requires doctors who provide medication abortions to have a contract with another doctor that has hospital admitting privileges. Supporters say it's what's best for women's health and that it ensures follow-up treatment if needed. Planned Parenthood says it is unnecessary and unconstitutional, and sued to block the law. The case made it to the Supremes, who said 'we're not touching this.' Which means the law could go into effect while it works its way through a lower court.

What to say to your co-worker who still misses "Scandal"…

Someone needs Olivia Pope. Yesterday, Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R) resigned as he faced possible impeachment. He was considered a rising star in the Republican party. But the governor has been dealing with some controversy lately. Earlier this year, Greitens was charged with an invasion of privacy felony after a woman he had an affair with accused him of taking an explicit photo without her consent. The charge was dropped but could be refiled. And there's a second felony charge of tampering with computer data still pending. He spent more than four months fighting to stay in office. Now, he says he'll be out by the end of the week.

What people are watching…

Belgium. Yesterday, a prison inmate shot and killed two police officers and a civilian there. The attacker was on a 48-hour leave – his 14th overall – meant to prepare him for his release in 2020. He killed two female police officers, and a man sitting in a parked car. Then yelled "Allahu Akbar" before being shot and killed by police after taking a hostage at a nearby school. Authorities are trying to figure out whether he became radicalized in prison, a problem that European officials are keeping a close eye on.

What to say when all your friends are in a bad mood...

Feeling the funk. So is the stock market. Yesterday, it took a dive after the Trump administration said it would impose tariffs on China after all. It also isn't liking the political drama happening in Italy right now. Non bene.

What to say when you need some inspo…

Meet Serena and her catsuit.
