Skimm'd while watching a sneak peek of this show

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"With tears in my eyes, I finished it" – A woman who took a Harvard Law exam while in labor. Mama's got a brand new...law degree.

A-B-SUED

The Story

The Department of Education is getting sued for pushing 'ignore' on a number of civil rights complaints.

Quick history lesson, please.

For years, the DOE's been getting thousands of civil rights complaints about US schools and universities. Think: things like schools mishandling sexual assault cases or not giving blind students access to proper textbooks. Earlier this year, the DOE switched up its policy on how it's handling these cases.

What's the new policy?

It lets the dept dismiss cases it thinks will be an "unreasonable burden" to address. It can also throw out cases if a person or group has submitted multiple complaints. And people who submit complaints can no longer appeal their cases. The dept says it's doing this to reduce a major backlog. Critics say it's not fair to victims. And makes it harder for advocates – who may see a pattern of violations across schools – to bring complaints on their behalf. Now, civil rights groups like the NAACP and the National Federation of the Blind are suing to block the policy.

This isn't the first time the department's gotten flak for cutting policies designed to protect civil rights over the past year. First it was trans students. Then sexual assault victims. Now this.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What people are watching...

Guatemala. Yesterday, a volcano erupted near Guatemala City. At least 25 people were killed and at least 20 were injured. Thousands have been evacuated. Now officials say residents should be on high alert for mudslides and rescue efforts have been paused due to safety concerns.

What to say when your sister calls with a big life update…

That's huge. So is this. A new study says that many women with a type of early-stage breast cancer can probably skip chemotherapy. Reminder: breast cancer is the most common type of cancer for women. Many patients get surgery followed by chemo – a toxic treatment that targets cancer cells – and hormone therapy. Now, this new study says that if the chances of the cancer coming back aren't high, then chemo doesn't often do that much. And surgery and hormone therapy on their own could often do the trick. Doctors say this change could prevent tens of thousands of women from getting unnecessary chemo.

What to say when your SO is trying to hide something...

We have no secrets. Apparently Facebook and device makers don't either. Yesterday, it came out that the Book reportedly gave device makers like Apple and Samsung access to users' personal info. Think: things like a user's political stance or relationship status. In case you somehow forgot, Facebook's been in hot water for that Cambridge Analytica scandal – where tens of millions of users' personal data was given to a political consulting firm without their permission. It sparked a bigger conversation about privacy protection and companies giving users' personal data to third parties. Now, this. Facebook's defending itself, saying these device partners are just extensions of Facebook. Speaking of devices, Apple's trying to get you off yours.

What to say to your friend who just got back from her honeymoon…

Here's what you missed. President Trump's lawyers are trying to get him out of answering any Qs in the Trump-Russia investigation. Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the Trump campaign's possible connection to Russia's election interference, and whether Trump obstructed justice. Now we're learning that Trump's lawyers reportedly sent Mueller a letter saying 'there was no obstruction.' Their reasoning: a president can't obstruct justice, because the Constitution says so. Also, Rudy Giuliani says the prez "probably" has the right to pardon himself. But he's not planning to. K. Meanwhile, Trump's date with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is officially back on. So put June 12 back on your cal. Guess that giant envelope was pretty convincing.

What people are talking about…

The migrant crisis. Yesterday, at least 46 migrants died after their boat sank off the coast of Tunisia. For the past few years, hundreds of thousands of people from the Mideast and Africa have fled their homes to escape things like war, violence, and poverty. Many go through Tunisia, especially after Libya tightened its borders. Yesterday, a boat with about 180 passengers sank. Rescue efforts are still underway. Many European countries – like Germany and France – have made it harder for migrants to pass their borders. But many migrants are still making the dangerous trek there anyway.

What to say when your friend tries to show off...

Just don't.
