Skimm This: The Amazon, Beach-side Summits, and Taylor Swift

August 23, 2019

It’s August 23rd. Today, we Skimm’d This:

  • Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro might call in the military to help deal with the fires blazing through the Amazon rainforest. There is plenty of international pressure for him to act, but he’s tried to pin the blame on outside groups.

  • The leaders of the G7 are heading to Biarritz in southwest France this weekend. They have a long to-do list, but right now it’s unlikely they’ll come to any concrete commitments by Monday.

  • Taylor Swift just dropped her latest album, ‘Lover’. But Swift is also a Fighter – for her music rights.

theSkimm: As fires continue to burn across the Amazon, Brazilan President Jair Bolsonaro has blamed NGOs for starting the fires and is picking fights with other countries for telling him how to do his job. We’ll give you the latest on the fires and how the international community is responding. Then: G7 leaders are holding their annual meeting this weekend in Biarritz. But the outlook at this beachside meeting isn’t sunny. Also on today’s show: Taylor Swift dropped her new album ‘Lover’ – and said she’s fighting for her music rights.

Note: We mistakenly said on this episode that São Paulo is the capital of Brazil. Brazil's capital is actually Brasilia. Skimm This regrets the error.
